Saigon Central Post Office
Bưu điện Trung tâm Sài Gòn
Is it worth visiting? Yes. It is free, open every day from about 7 am to 7 pm, and right next to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Step inside for the vaulted hall, old maps and wooden phone booths, and send a postcard from a post office that still works.

Why go
- Built between 1886 and 1891, it is usually credited to the architect Alfred Foulhoux. The popular story that Gustave Eiffel designed it has no documentary evidence.
- The main hall has a steel-ribbed glass vault, a clock over the entrance and two hand-drawn 19th-century maps on the walls.
- Rows of wooden public telephone booths still line the hall, and you can buy stamps and post cards home.
How to get there
- Next door to the Notre-Dame Cathedral.
- Metro Line 1: Opera House station, about a 10-minute walk.
- Ride-hailing: ask for “Bưu điện Thành phố”.
Local tips
- Mornings are calmer before tour buses arrive.
- Souvenir stalls inside are convenient but not the cheapest; compare before buying.
- Hours can shift slightly around Tết and national holidays.
