Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral

Nhà thờ Chính tòa Đức Bà Sài Gòn

Is it worth visiting? Yes, go, but mostly for the outside for now. The red-brick cathedral has been under a major restoration since 2017 and is wrapped in scaffolding; inside access has been limited to Mass and registered groups. It sits right next to the Central Post Office, so see both in one stop.

Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, Ho Chi Minh City

Current status

Restoration began in July 2017, led by Belgium's Monument group. The original 2027 target will not be met because many parts are badly damaged; no new completion date has been given (Dân Trí, March 2026). In December 2025, the inside was open for Mass at 5:30 am and 5:30 pm and for registered pilgrim groups, but not yet for general sightseeing (Thanh Niên). Check at the gate when you visit.

Why go

  • Built from 1877 to 1880 with materials shipped from Europe, it is Saigon's best-known colonial landmark and still a working cathedral.
  • In March 2026 two gilded crosses, each about 3.7 m tall and 400 kg, were lifted to the top of the bell tower, one of the restoration's big milestones.
  • The square in front, with the statue of the Virgin Mary, is a classic photo spot and a short walk from Nguyen Hue and Ben Thanh Market.

How to get there

  • Metro Line 1: Opera House station, about a 10-minute walk.
  • City buses are free until 31 Dec 2026; many routes stop around Ben Thanh, about 15 minutes on foot.
  • Ride-hailing: ask for “Nhà thờ Đức Bà”.

Local tips

  • Come early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer tour groups.
  • If you go in for Mass, cover shoulders and knees and stay quiet; photos during services are not appropriate.
  • The square is ringed by busy traffic: cross with the steady, slow walk locals use.
